Things are always going on behind the scenes at Thinstack, but it's not always easy to make sure everyone is informed about what's happening in the IRC channels. Thinstack is much more than a simple IRC network. It's a community of people with common interests. One such interest is the constant battle against cancer and other diseases through the process of protein “folding” This is a process that requires much more computer power than is likely to be found under a single roof.
That's why there's a distributed processing effort underway called Folding@Home. FaH (as we call it) takes advantage of unused processor cycles on your computer to crunch on the math-intensive protein folding process, and sends the results back to Stanford University, where the project is actually housed.
Thinstack has participated in the FaH project since early 2007, and encourages its members to join this worthy cause! If you'd like to be a part of the effort, click and download the client appropriate to your computer's operating system software. Then, to join the Thinstack Folding Team, enter team number 81117 in your FaH configuration. Welcome to the team!
Thinstack is home to many people who enjoy a good action-packed game now and then, and what better way to let off some steam by playing online and putting the smackdown on some other members?
Thinstack is proud to have created an extension of the community into the gaming realm, via Steam. One the most popular common games is Counter Strike : Source. If you like to do a little fragging, or if you're a dedicated hardcore virtual killer, you might enjoy an action-packed run with the rest of the Thinstack folks!
In your Steam servers window, add cstrike.thinstack.net to your favorites to join up!
Thinstack is, at it's core, a community built around IRC, and plays host to many witty individuals who have something to say. Sometimes something is said that is particularly witty, funny or snarky enough to be passed on to folks who might not have been connected when it happened.
That's what the quotes page is for. Here you can read through some of the funniest and most insightful thoughts and one-shots that are posted in the channels, as posted by Thinstack users. You can vote for or against quotes to raise or lower its popularity.
